June 1, 2008...Biddeford, ME
Proceeds from the 10th Annual Mary's Walk and the Kerrymen Pub Road Race were announced at a reception for event volunteers and supporters. Now in its 10th year, the 2008 March event broke all records, with an increase in participants (over 2500), individual fund raising and corporate sponsorship. A check in the amount of $190,000 was presented to the Maine Cancer Foundation. With this donation, the ten-year total of funds raised at Mary's Walk reached a remarkable $1 million!

The Top Individual fund raiser was Alisa Kelley of South Portland who has participated in the event for the past 4 years. "I choose to raise money for Mary's Walk is because I have many friends and family members who have faced cancer throughout the years, some have lost their battle with cancer, some have beaten cancer, while others are courageously fighting their way into being cancer free. The Maine Cancer Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and well being of Maine people and 100% of all funds raised remain in the State of Maine, which is a key point when I ask people for donations," said Alisa.

Mary's Walk is named for Mary Kerry Libby, a much-loved wife, mother, sister and friend who lost her life to cancer in 1997 at age 44. Chaired by her husband, Gene Libby, and sister-in-law Jane Kerry, the event committee includes a dozen friends who work tirelessly to organize a well run and memorable event. "People come from throughout Maine, NH and beyond to renew a commitment to life, to each other, and to the common struggle against cancer," said Gene Libby. "It's grown to be much more than we ever imagined," said Jane Kerry.

Established in 1976, the Maine Cancer Foundation, is an independent, Maine-based charity that awards grants to advance cancer research, education and patient support. 100% of funds raised remain in Maine. "Maine Cancer Foundation is deeply appreciative to be the beneficiary of funds raised at Mary's Walk," said Susan Rowan, Executive Director. "This event and the revenue it generates plays a tremendous role in the Foundation's ability to advance cancer research and to find hope," added Doug Carr, President of the Board of Director's.

The 2009 Mary's Walk and Kerrymen Pub Road Race will be held on Sunday, March 15. For more information visit www.maryswalk.org. To learn about the Maine Cancer Foundation visit www.mainecancer.org or call toll free in Maine 1-866-627-2411

This is truly a remarkable accomplishment which, in large part, is brought about by our supporters and participants like you.
