Founded in 1976, the Maine Cancer Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Maine people. An independent, grant-making Maine charity, the Foundation funds cancer research, education and patient support programs. 100% of funds raised, remain in Maine. In 2007 Research Grants were awarded to explore Sprouty4: a possible Repressor of ID Protein Function in Breast Cancer at MMC Research Institute,(MMCRI) Scarborough; N-Terminal Osteopontin Fragment as a Novel Breast Cancer Marker, University of Southern Maine, Portland; Array-based Comparative Genomic Hybridization of Circulating Tumor Cells in Breast Cancer Patients Before and After Treatment, Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health (MIHGH), Bangor; RECQL4 Protein-Protein Interactions in Human Osteosarcoma Cell Lines, MIHGH, Bangor; Twist Dimers as Markers of Tumor Metastasis, MMCRI, Scarborough.
Education and Patient Support Grants were awarded to Eastern Maine Health Systems, Bangor to implement a cancer survivor program; Mercy Hospital, Portland to address the needs of cancer survivors; Cancer Community Center, So. Portland for patient and family support programs; Maine Breast Cancer Coalition to meet the needs of underinsured and uninsured breast cancer patients throughout Maine; Camp Sunshine, Casco to provide a week at camp for a family affected by cancer; Southern Maine Community College, South Portland for advanced Radiation Therapy student training; Cancer Care Center of York County, Sanford to implement a nutrition program for patients; Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, Scarborough to develop a toolkit for families with the hereditary form of colon cancer; Two Roads Maine to provide scholarship for breast cancer survivors; Breast Cancer Diaries, to air the documentary film at no charge in three Maine communities; the F. Holland Day Center, Georgetown to provide scholarship to cancer patients attending this retreat program; Alfond Cancer Treatment Center, Oakland for patient nutrition intervention and Vital Pathways, Houlton, for a community wide skin cancer education and awareness.
